    • “An Error Has Occurred” or “Automatic Backup is Currently Unavailable” Appears in the Save Data Cloud Screen and Automatic Save Data Backup Has Stopped

This article can help you when save data cannot be backed up automatically on your Nintendo Switch system and the following error message appears next to a game title in the Save Data Cloud menu: “An error has occurred.”

Important: Prior to a Nintendo Switch system update released on April 6, 2021, automatic save data backup for a game could sometimes stop due to an error. It is necessary to take certain steps to allow automatic save data backup to continue if this error occurred for one of your games. After updating your system to version 12.0.0 or higher, follow the steps below to check if the error is occurring for any of your games and resolve the error.

      Note

      • A Nintendo Switch Online membership and an Internet connection is required to back up save data to Save Data Cloud.
      • Some games and applications do not support Save Data Cloud backup.

      Complete these steps

      1. Ensure your console has the latest system update.

      2. From the HOME Menu select System Settings, then Data Management, then Save Data Cloud.

      3. Select the user whose save data backups you are checking.

      4. Scroll through the list of game titles with save data backup functionality and check if any of them show “An error has occurred.”
        • If there are no errors in this list, then there has not been an interruption in your automatic save data backups.

      1. Select a game that has the error and confirm that the date and time of the console save data matches what you want to back up to the Save Data Cloud.
        • If this issue is occurring, then automatic save data backup has stopped at a certain point in the past, so it is highly likely that the save data on the console is newer. You can also start the game title from the HOME menu to confirm that you wish to back up the current save data.

      1. Select Back Up Save Data to manually back up the console save data and resume the automatic backup process.
        • If you would prefer to overwrite the console save data with the older save data that has been backed up, select Download Save Data. The current console save data cannot be recovered if you do this.

      1. Repeat these steps with any other users and game titles on the system to confirm that all errors have been resolved and automatic save data backup has resumed.

      Situation not resolved

If you are unable to back up your save data after following these steps, select View Details to view the reason the save data cannot be backed up. Save data backup may not be possible if:

      • You are currently not connected to the Internet

        Important:

        What to Do:

Check the status of the most recent save data backup stored to the cloud by going to “System Settings” > “Data Management” > “Save Data Cloud Backup.” Select the intended user, then select the software in question.

        • On the right-hand side of the screen will be displayed the timestamp for the most recent save data that was backed up to the cloud, along with the most recent save data that is available on the console.

        • If the save data on the console is more recent than the version stored in the cloud service, you can either manually back up your save data by selecting “Back Up Save Data,” or you can download the save data stored to the cloud by selecting “Download Save Data.”

        • Keep in mind that any overwritten save data cannot be recovered.

      • Message: "Backup was cancelled because other save data has been backed up."

        Description:

While accessing a game’s save data within System Settings on Nintendo Switch, a message is displayed, “Backup was canceled because other save data has been backed up."

        Important:

        • When this message is displayed, the automatic save data backup feature will be turned off.
        • Only one save data backup file per game can be stored to the cloud.

        Background:

The save data backup may have been canceled due to the following:

        • You played without first downloading the most recent save data backup that is stored to the Save Data Cloud service.

        • You played on another console and backed up that save data to the Save Data Cloud service, hence the save data you are trying to back up from this console is different.

        What to Do:

Since the save data backup is different from the save data on this console, you will need to decide which save data you want to keep.

You can either manually back up your game progress from the console and overwrite the backup stored online, or you can download the backup stored online and overwrite the save data on your console.

Keep in mind that overwritten save data cannot be recovered.

        Best practices:

If after backing up your save data on one console, you intend to play on another console, it is recommended that you download the most recent backup stored in the Save Data Cloud service prior to playing on the second console.
