Nintendo Accounts / My Nintendo Support

    • What is a child account?

Previously, Nintendo Accounts were only available to user of age 13 and older. With the introduction of child accounts, they can now be created for children of any age. To create an account for a child, a parent or guardian must have a Nintendo Account.

Having a Nintendo Account allows the user to access various services through My Nintendo, receive various discount offers and exclusive items, and enjoy other benefits. For more details about services you can use with a Nintendo Account, please visit this FAQ.

*For information on how to create a child account, please see "How can I create a child account?"

    • What are the characteristics of a child account?

A child account has the following characteristics:

      • An email address cannot be registered to a child account. As such, any notifications sent via email are sent to the email account registered with the parent or guardian's Nintendo Account that manages the child's account. Benefits that are given to Nintendo Accounts based on whether they have an active opt-in to promotional emails can not be granted to child accounts.
      • Child accounts can only be created for users aged 17 and under.
      • Some My Nintendo missions cannot be completed by users with child accounts.

Other than these points, the function is almost identically to any other Nintendo Account.

    • How many child accounts can be managed through a single parent or guardian's Nintendo Account?

A single parent or guardian's Nintendo Account can be used to manage up to 5 child accounts.

    • Can social media accounts such as Facebook be linked to a child account?

Unlike with other Nintendo Accounts, you cannot link a Facebook, Twitter, Google or an Apple ID account to a child account. An NNID can still be linked.

    • What is the oldest a child can be in order to have a child account created for them?

An account for a child can be made for any child under the age of 18.

    • How can I create a child account?

Please follow these steps to create a child account.

You, as the child's parent or guardian, must already have a Nintendo Account. If you do not have a Nintendo Account yet, please create one for yourself first.

The user of the parent or guardian's Nintendo Account must be 18 or older. If you need to check the birth date set within a Nintendo Account, please sign in and check the birth date on the profile.

If you already have a Nintendo Account:

      1. Sign in to your Nintendo Account.

      2. Select "Family Group", then "Add member", followed by "Create a child account".

      3. Next, enter information for the child who will use the account.

      4. After confirming the content, select OK.

If you do not already have a Nintendo Account:

      1. Visit the Nintendo Account website.

      2. Select "Create a Nintendo Account" and follow the instructions on screen.

      3. After creating the parent or guardian's Nintendo Account, follow the instructions above to create a child account.

If a child attempts to create a Nintendo Account by inputting an age of 15 or younger, they are given the option to have an email sent to their guardian requesting that a child account be created. In that case, please use the link within the email, select "Create a Nintendo account", then follow the instructions on screen.

    • Can information registered to a child account be changed after it is created?

The birth date registered to a child account cannot be changed. However, the following information can be changed either through the child's account or through the parent or guardian's Nintendo Account that manages the child account in question.

      • Nickname
      • User ID
      • Mii
      • Gender
      • Password

Linking a Nintendo Network ID to a child account can only be done through the child's account.

    • Can you change which account is used to manage a child account?

No, you cannot change the parent or guardian Nintendo Account used to manage a child account after the child account has been created.

    • What happens to a child account if the parent or guardian's Nintendo Account is deleted?

Any child accounts managed through the parent or guardian's Nintendo Account would also be deleted. After requesting an account be deleted, the guardian has 30 days to reactivate their account. Reactivating an account will also reactivate any child accounts managed by it.

Please follow these steps to change the password on the account for the child:

      1. Sign into the guardian's Nintendo Account that manages the account for the child.
      2. Select "Child Accounts", then select the account for the child who forgot their password.

      1. Sign into the parent or guardian's Nintendo Account that manages the child account.
      2. Select "Child accounts", then select the account for the child that was deleted.
      3. Next, select "Reactivate" to reactivate the account.
    • I tried to create an account for a child, but I receive an error even though the child's age is under 18. What should I do?

There is a chance you are mistakeningly entering the child's age on the screen where you are creating the Nintendo Account for the guardian who must be 18 or older.

      • If you attempt to enter the age of a user aged 12 or under on the account creation page for general users, you will not be able to create an account. However, it will ask if you'd like to have an email sent in order to have a child account created for the child. If you receive that email and already have a Nintendo Account, you can use it to create an account for the child.

If you receive that email and don't already have a Nintendo Account, please start by creating a Nintendo Account for a parent or guardian. At this stage, if you enter an age younger than 18, it will show an error message.

    • Can the link to a Nintendo Network ID be added or removed from a child account?

      Yes, it can.

After creating the child account, sign in with the child's account information here. While signed in, you can change the link to the child's Nintendo Network ID under "Linked accounts".
