    • How to Transfer Animal Crossing: New Horizons Save Data to a New Nintendo Switch System Overview

Animal Crossing: New Horizons allows you and up to 7 others on your Nintendo Switch system to live on one shared island. The save data for the island or for the individual residents of the island can be transferred to a new Nintendo Switch system after updating the game software to the latest version.  The island save data can also be backed up in case you lose access to your Nintendo Switch system and can be restored on a replacement system.

      Please note:

There are three ways to transfer Animal Crossing: New Horizons save data to a new Nintendo Switch system. Please read about each option to determine which feature you would like to use:

      Entire Island Transfer

Use this feature if you wish to transfer the entire island and all residents to a new Nintendo Switch system. The island, all progress and customizations, your animal neighbors, the island resident representative, and any other residents that have been created on the island will be transferred.

This feature is helpful if you are replacing your Nintendo Switch system with a new one and all players who have played Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be using the new Nintendo Switch system. It is also the only way to transfer your island resident representative when you have not backed up your island.

You must have access to both the original system and the new system to use this feature.

      Resident Move (Single Player Transfer)

Use this feature if you wish to transfer just one resident to a new Nintendo Switch system. The resident, the resident’s home, and the resident’s customizations will be transferred. This island resident representative cannot be transferred.

This feature is helpful when just one player wants to continue playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons on a new Nintendo Switch or when multiple residents other than the island resident representative will be using the new Nintendo Switch. The transferred player(s) will move to a new island with new animals, so any island progress and animal neighbors will remain on the original Nintendo Switch system.

You must have access to both the original system and the new system to use this feature.

      Island Backup and Restore

Use the island backup feature to ensure your island save data can be recovered in a situation where you lose access to your Nintendo Switch system. If you have enabled island backup, you will be able to restore the last saved version of your island and all residents on a replacement Nintendo Switch system.

You must have already enabled island backup on the original system to use this feature, but you can restore the island save data using only the new system.

    • How to Transfer an Island to a New Nintendo Switch System (Animal Crossing: New Horizons)

In this article, you’ll learn how to transfer an entire island and all residents in Animal Crossing: New Horizons to a new Nintendo Switch system.

      Important

        • Access to both the source Nintendo Switch system and the target Nintendo Switch system is required to transfer a resident. Local wireless communication must be enabled on both systems.

        • The Save Data Transfer Tool (free software) must be downloaded from Nintendo eShop on both systems.

        • The island will no longer be available to visit on the source Nintendo Switch system after transferring. If you would rather only transfer individual residents (not including the island resident representative) to a separate island on the target system, see our steps on How to Transfer an Individual Resident to a New Island.

      Complete these steps

Will the target (new) system be completely replacing the source (original) system in your household?

Yes, only the target system will be used

Follow these steps if you will no longer be using the source system. These steps ensure that all your users and user data will be transferred to the target system.

      1. Make sure that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is updated to the latest software version on your source system.

      2. Download the Save Data Transfer Tool for Animal Crossing: New Horizons on your source system, if you haven’t already.

      3. Transfer the user data for your user account to the target Nintendo Switch system. This will transfer all user information and save data except for Animal Crossing: New Horizons save data to the target system.
        • Repeat this step for each user account. If you are transferring all user accounts, a default account named “User” will remain on the source system.

      4. On the target system, update Animal Crossing: New Horizons to the latest software version.

      5. On the target system, download the Save Data Transfer Tool for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

      6. Open the Save Data Transfer Tool on each system.

      7. Follow the on-screen instructions and select Continue, then Let’s Begin.

      8. On the source system, select Source.

      9. Select Yes to confirm when the name of your island on the source system is displayed.
        • If Animal Crossing: New Horizons has not been updated to the latest software version, your console nickname will be displayed instead of your island name.

      10. On the target system, select Target

      11. On the source system, select Continue. On the target system, select Proceed.

      12. When the target system is detected, select Transfer data on the source system.

      13. When the source system is detected, select Proceed on the target system. The transfer will begin.

      14. When the transfer is complete, a message will appear on both systems. The save data is now deleted on the source system and present on the target system.

      15. Launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the target system to continue playing on your island.

No, my household will use both systems

Follow these steps if you will continue to use the source system. Note that your island will be completely transferred to the target system, so you will no longer be able to play on the island on your source system.

      1. Make sure that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is updated to the latest software version on both systems.

      2. Download the Save Data Transfer Tool for Animal Crossing: New Horizons on both systems, if you haven’t already.

      3. Open the Save Data Transfer Tool on each system.

      4. Follow the on-screen instructions and select Continue, then Let’s Begin.

      5. On the source system, select Source.

      6. Select Yes to confirm when the name of your island on the source system is displayed.
          • If Animal Crossing: New Horizons has not been updated to the latest software version, your console nickname will be displayed instead of your island name.

      7. On the target system, select Target.

      8. On the source system, select Continue. On the target system, select Proceed.

      9. When the target system is detected, select Transfer data on the source system.

      10. When the source system is detected, select Proceed on the target system. The transfer will begin.

      11. When the transfer is complete, a message will appear on both systems. The save data is now deleted on the source system and present on the target system.

      12. Launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the target system using the user account you will be using for your resident.

      13. When prompted, select the resident name for the user account. You cannot change the resident associated with your user account later, so be sure it is the correct one.
          • Repeat this step for any other user accounts and residents that will be playing the game.

    • How to Transfer an Individual Resident to a New Island (Animal Crossing: New Horizons)

In this article, you’ll learn how to move an individual resident (a single player) in Animal Crossing: New Horizons to an island on a new Nintendo Switch system.

      Important:

      • Access to both the source Nintendo Switch system and the target Nintendo Switch system is required to transfer a resident. Local wireless must be enabled on both systems.

      • A copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons on both systems is required.

      • The resident you want to transfer must already be living in a house.

      • The island resident representative cannot be transferred individually. You can only transfer the resident representative along with the entire island using the Save Data Transfer Tool. For steps to do so, see How to Transfer an Island to a New Nintendo Switch System.

      Complete these steps

Will the player that you’re transferring use only the new Nintendo Switch system moving forward?

      Yes

      1. Transfer the User Data of the player from the source (original) Nintendo Switch system to the target (replacement) Nintendo Switch system.
        • This will transfer all software save data other than Animal Crossing: New Horizons tied to the user account to the target system.

      1. Make sure that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is updated to the latest software version on both systems.

      1. On the source system, launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons using any other user (such as the island resident representative).

      1. Press the – Button at the title screen to open the Settings menu.

      1. Select Move to a new island.

      1. Select Move another resident.
        • It is not possible to move the island resident representative. You may wish to transfer the entire island to the new Nintendo Switch system in order to transfer the resident representative.

      1. Select the name of the resident that will be moving, then select Yes, that is correct.

      1. Review the details of the transfer process and select OK.

      1. Select Yes, I’m Ready! and then Let’s do it! to send a transfer request.

      1. On the target system, launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons using the user that you transferred.

      1. Select I’m moving when asked by Timmy and Tommy.

      1. Select Yes, I have! when asked if you have already sent a transfer request.

      1. Select Start the process to search for the transfer request sent from the source system.

      1. When the island name and resident’s name are displayed, select Yes, that is correct.

      1. On the source system, select Let’s do it! to confirm the target Nintendo Switch you will be moving to. At this point, the transfer cannot be canceled.

      1. After the message “Thank you so much for being patient. Everything is ready!” is displayed, you can close the game on the source system.

      1. On the target system, you will arrive on the island and get to choose a location to set up the same house you had on the source system.
        • If you are the first user to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the target system, you will be the new island’s resident representative. Moving a house takes some time, so you will be sleeping in a tent on your first night on the island.

        • If the island is already inhabited by someone on the target system, your house will be moved over immediately.

No, they will use both systems

      1. Make sure that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is updated to the latest software version on both systems.

      1. On the source system, launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons and select the user whose resident will be moving.

      1. Press the – Button at the title screen to open the Settings menu.

      1. Select Move to a new island.

      1. Select Move me off the island.
        • It is not possible to move if you are the island resident representative. You may wish to transfer the entire island to the new Nintendo Switch system in order to transfer the resident representative.

      1. Select Yes, that is correct.

      1. Review the details of the transfer process and select Yes, I’m ready, then Yes, I’m ready! again to send a transfer request.

      1. On the target system, launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons and select the user account that you want to use for your resident.
        • You cannot select a user that has already played Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the target system. If you need to create a new user account, see How to Add a New User Account.

      1. Select I’m moving when asked by Timmy and Tommy.

      1. Select Yes, I have! when asked if you have already sent a transfer request.

      1. Select Start the process to search for the transfer request sent from the source system.

      1. When the island name and your resident’s name are displayed, select Yes, that is correct.

      1. On the source system, select I want to move to confirm the target Nintendo Switch you will be moving to. At this point, the transfer cannot be canceled.

      1. After the message “Thank you so much for waiting.

    • Is this game compatible with Save Data Cloud?

This game does not support the Save Data Cloud functionality of Nintendo Switch Online. However, after you update the game to version 1.4.0 or later, you will have the ability to enable island backup in the event of console failure, loss, or theft. This feature is available to those with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

    • What is island backup?

Island backup saves your island data and progress to our servers in the event you lose access to your Nintendo Switch system. If this happens, you can restore your island on a replacement Nintendo Switch system. Island backup is not enabled by default, so you will need to enable it in the in-game settings. For more information, see How to Backup and Restore Island Save Data (Animal Crossing: New Horizons).

    • What do I need to enable island backup?

To enable island backup, you need a Nintendo Account that has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and that has created a resident on the island. Only one island resident can enable island backup, but the island data and progress will be backed up for all players in the event in needs to be restored.

    • When do island backups happen?

After island backup is enabled, your island data is saved periodically when your Nintendo Switch system is connected to the internet and no one is playing the game on your system. The last time your island was backed up will be displayed in the bottom-left corner of the title screen.

    • How do I restore data from my island backup?

If you have replaced your Nintendo Switch system after it was lost or broken, you can restore you island data using the same Nintendo Account that enabled island backup.

    • How to Backup and Restore Island Save Data (Animal Crossing: New Horizons)

      Important

      Note

      • Island backup and restore features are available after installing the latest game software version (1.4.0 or later).

      • When enabled, island backup data is stored periodically when no one is currently playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons on your Nintendo Switch system and the system is connected to the internet.

      What to do

      Enable island backup

      1. Open Animal Crossing: New Horizons and select a user with a compatible Nintendo Account.
        • In order to enable island backup:
          • Use a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

          • Use a Nintendo Account that has a resident on the island. Each user on a Nintendo Switch system can create a resident and move to the island soon after starting the game.

          • Your Nintendo Switch system must have a stable connection to the internet.

          • Your game must be updated to the latest software version (1.4.0 or later).

          • Island backup cannot already be enabled. If any other resident on the island has already enabled island back up, you will not be able to enable it as a different resident. The original resident can disable island backup if you wish to enable it using a different account.

      2. From the title screen, press the – Button to access the Settings menu.

      3. Select Enable island backup.
        • If island backup cannot be enabled, it may be because your Nintendo Switch is not currently connected to the internet or your Nintendo Account does not currently have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

      4. After island backup is enabled, you can view the date and time of the last backup on the title screen of the game. A backup is made periodically whenever the game is not being played and the Nintendo Switch system is connected to the internet.

      Restore island data

Important: Island data can only be restored if your Nintendo Switch system has been lost, stolen or not operational and you had enabled island backup in Animal Crossing: New Horizons on that system. It is not possible to remotely enable island backup without access to the system. You will also need a replacement system to restore the island data.

Was your system repaired by a Nintendo Service Center?

      No

Recovery is only available in situations where a Nintendo Switch system is lost, stolen, or not operational. A new or repaired Nintendo Switch system is required. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is also required. In the event of loss or damage, contact Nintendo Consumer Support, and a representative can help you restore the island and user save data on your new or repaired Nintendo Switch system (standard charges apply for non-warranty repairs). For all information on product(s) warranty please visit https://www.nintendo.com.au/warranty.

      Yes

Important: If your system was repaired, your save data may already be on the system. Open Animal Crossing: New Horizons to determine if your island appears on the title screen. If so, no further action is necessary to return to your island.

If you have received your Nintendo Switch Console and your data is not on the system and the island backup was previously enabled, you can follow the below steps to restore your island data.

      1. Select Animal Crossing: New Horizons and choose the user with the Nintendo Account that originally enabled island backup.
        • In order to restore island data:
          • Your Nintendo Switch system must have a stable connection to the internet.

          • Your game must be updated to the latest software version (1.4.0 or later).

      2. As the game begins to open, you will see a black screen with the Nintendo logo in the top-left. Press and hold the – Button when this screen appears.

      3. If performed correctly, a message will appear that asks if you want to check for island data to restore. Select Begin.
        • If you see Timmy and Tommy at the Nook Inc. reception desk, the button input failed. Close the game and reopen it to try again.

        • If you see a title screen with villagers walking around an island, then you may have already started a new island on your Nintendo Switch system. If you wish to replace this island with your island backup, you must first delete the save data for Animal Crossing: New Horizons from your system, then reopen the game and try again. Your new island will not be able to be recovered after you delete the save data.

      4. Select Check to search for island data to restore.
        • If island data cannot be found, it may be because your Nintendo Switch is not currently connected to the internet or you are not using the same Nintendo Account that was used to enable island backup.

      5. If you enabled island backup for multiple islands, you will be presented with each island name and some details. Select the island you wish to restore on your Nintendo Switch system, then select Recover Data.

      6. Select Yes, please to confirm you are ready to restore the selected island backup.
        • If you started a new island on your Nintendo Switch, it will be lost and replaced with your island backup.

      7. After your island is restored, the game will restart, and you will return to your island.

If your island is restored, you’re all set!

However if you are unable to restore your island after following these steps, please contact us for additional support.

    • Disable island backup
      1. Open Animal Crossing: New Horizons and select the user with the Nintendo Account that originally enabled island backup.
        • In order to disable island backup:
          • Your Nintendo Switch system must have a stable connection to the internet.

          • Your game must be updated to the latest software version (1.4.0 or later).

      2. From the title screen, press the – Button to access the Settings menu.

      3. Select Disable island backup, then Yes, disable backup to confirm.
        • If island backup cannot be disabled, it may be because your Nintendo Switch is not currently connected to the internet or you are not using the same Nintendo Account that was used to enable island backup.

After island backup is disabled, it will not be possible to restore island data in the case your Nintendo Switch system is lost or stolen. You can re-enable island backup using a Nintendo Account that has a resident on the island and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

    • Can I disable island backup after it is enabled?

Yes. After island backup is enabled, it can be disabled by the same user that enabled it in the in-game settings.

    • How many players can share a single island?

Up to eight players can live on one shared island, using the same Nintendo Switch system, and one game.

    • How many users can play together?

Up to eight players can live on the same island within each game. With one Nintendo Switch system and one game, up to four people can play on the same island simultaneously (additional accessories required).

Additionally, up to eight people can play together on one island via local wireless or online play. Local wireless play and online play require one system and one game per player. For online play, a Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account are required.

    • When multiple players live on one island, does everyone have access to the same places and items?

There are some tasks on the island that the Resident Representative (first resident on the island) must complete before the related features will be open to other players. For example, only the Resident Representative can receive and set up Blathers’ museum tent. Once the tent is in place, all island residents can donate items to the museum.

It is not possible to reassign the Resident Representative role to another player. If certain places or items in the game aren’t available for island residents, have the Resident Representative progress to the point where the item or feature is available for them, then try again.

    • Is there a way to create multiple islands?

You can only create one island per Nintendo Switch system, even if you use multiple games. A different system is required to create a different island.

The island save data is saved on the Nintendo Switch system, so there will only be one island (save file), even if different games are used on the same system.
